Aliguda
Village comprises 30 families living in Moar Valley in Adilabad
district, Andhra Pradesh, India. They belong to the Gond tribe
and live in poverty. In 2004, the community planted 3,000 pongamia
trees for the purpose of extracting oil from its seeds. In
2005, it plans to plant an additional 5,000 trees. Pongamia
oil will be used to run farm equipment and pump groundwater.
The surplus oil will be sold in the market. The village has
identified 49 mother trees, which produce large quantities
of seeds, to provide material for pongamia nurseries. Aliguda
village, therefore, has been recognized as an environmental
pioneer. |
